There are many misconceptions about the language and its prevalence in Barcelona, as well as around Catalonia. First of all, it is its own language; not a dialect. Historical records show that it is one of the first languages to develop on the Iberian Peninsula. However, since the Kingdom of Castille became the local superpower, they imposed their language on the rest of the kingdoms after they united the country into what is now Spain. Catalan, as well as other local languages, like Basque, were ignored and, in extreme cases, criminalized, such as during Franco’s dictatorship. It is only until the 1980s that the language, and the associated culture, experienced a renaissance, which is still felt today.
