The properties, uses and applications of chemical elements and their relationship with minerals will be the main theme of the 41st edition of Expominer Barcelona Market, the Minerals, Fossils and Jewelry Exhibition, which coincides with the celebration of the international year of the periodic table , and will feature 110 exhibitors from more than 15 countries, as well as a wide variety of activities, including exhibitions, workshops, competitions and informative talks.
The new edition of Expominer, the leading exhibition in its field in Spain and a reference in southern Europe, will be held from November 8 to 10 at the Montjuïc de Fira site in Barcelona and will offer the best fossil, gems, jewelry exhibition offer and minerals to visitors with 110 exhibitors from more than 15 countries. In addition, the show will also offer an extensive program of activities between talks given by renowned scientists, specialized workshops for experts and for those interested in entering the world of minerals, contests for the whole family and exhibitions on fossils and minerals.
In this sense, the dissemination activities of this edition will focus on the relationships between the chemical elements of the periodic table, minerals, and their applications. They will talk about their discovery and their properties, and the possibilities they have for use and recycling in technology. Among others, the presentations of Dr. Josep Maria Chimenos, from the departmental section of Materials Science and Engineering, Faculty of Chemistry – University of Barcelona, on sustainable materials from municipal waste, and that of Dr. Ana M. López-Periago, Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona – ICMAB-CSIC, on the discovery of elements in minerals.
The director of the room, Marta Serra, said that “we face this new edition with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and with the same vocation to promote the popular scientific dissemination. Also, coinciding with the celebration of the international year of the periodic table, This year we have placed more emphasis on making the attendees aware of the importance of minerals in our daily lives. ” Also, he added that “sustainability is an important axis of the room and, through different activities, we want to raise awareness among visitors. In addition, minerals are the source of all sustainable energies and that is why, this year, we have the support of Obra Social La Caixa for the organization of the event “.
The exhibitors will show the more than 12,000 visitors expected to receive during the three days of the show – students, collectors, and amateurs – the latest developments in the sector, among which are lunar minerals from Rosell Minerals, light samples exhibited by Fabre Minerals and the Gaya company will show very original and hard-to-find pieces of opal wood and native copper.
Live the Geology
This year returns one of the most valued activities in previous editions, “Live the Geology”, organized by the University of Barcelona (UB). Through it, visitors can visit an exhibition on the textures of the main rocks; as well as knowing which ones have been used in the construction of some of the most important buildings in the city. In addition, the little ones can build and take home an interior model of the Earth, in which you can see the layers that form it, with the minerals and elements corresponding to each.
Also, children up to 13 years old will be able to qualify for a surprise prize with the contest “Element of the Periodic Table and the application in daily life”, presenting an original drawing about the use of any of these elements in our day to day. The little ones will be able to see and take a picture with a replica of tyrannosaurus rex that will be present every day; They may also participate in the daily draw of a quartz geode, a pyrite or a sample of fuchsite mica to start or expand their collection. All visitors will receive a daily gift sample with admission.
