The healthy city
The city of fifteen minutes
This year, the programming of the 48h Open House BCN architecture festival is organized around the theme The healthy city, and has been grouped into areas that can be covered on foot with a maximum distance of fifteen minutes between the different ctivities.
Urbanistically, the concept of the city of fifteen minutes claims the location of basic services at a maximum distance of fifteen minutes walking for citizens and is committed to a fair city (respectful of people), human (which promotes sustainable mobility and eliminates travel unnecessary) and sustainable (environmentally friendly).
The theme of the year, The Healthy City , is a cross-cutting theme that encompasses different programming highlights. First of all, the city of people , that city that takes into account the architecture for vulnerable people and groups (for example, the Aprop housing and the CIBA building, in Santa Coloma de Gramenet), and which proposes new collective architectures that distance citizens from individualism (with examples such as cooperative housing in transfer of use La Balma and Cirerers, or the implementation of ways of working in a group that involve citizens, such as the urban regeneration project of the Matacavalls area, in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat).
Secondly, the city-neighborhood, a city that is as conducive to local urbanism and sustainable mobility as it is able to adapt to changes (with activities such as the meeting on sustainable mobility at the SEAT House and bicycle itineraries that connect the metropolitan area of Barcelona, or visits to the city’s underground water regulation tanks).
Finally, the Mediterranean city, the city that is built taking into account the climatic, cultural and social characteristics of the Mediterranean, and that is globally committed to environmental sustainability. Examples of this program are the Catalan vaulted construction by the architect Rafael Guastavino, which can be visited in Vilassar de Dalt; the architecture of Josep Maria Jujol of Sant Joan Despí; the reconversion of the industrial heritage of Badalona and Barcelona’s Poblenou, with examples such as La Caci and Orfebreria, and energy-efficient buildings such as the CEM Turó de la Peira.
To adapt to the circumstances caused by the pandemic by COVID-19, this year the festival offers, apart from the usual face-to-face visits, guided tours with audio guide and virtual activities . In addition, the festival extends in time : it begins on October 15, with the opening of the exhibition Your experience and mine: your exhibition and mine, which is celebrated on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the architecture festival, in the Espai Mercè Sala of the Diagonal interchange (with the support of TMB); and will end the weekend of November 14 and 15, with the celebration of the first Open House Worlwide architecture festival, which will bring together different cities around the world that are part of the international Open House network to exhibit and discuss issues architectural concerns around the world. All the digital content of the visits (audio guides, videos, photographs…) will be available on the association’s website throughout 2020, which will allow it to be visited spaced throughout the year.
On the weekend of October 24 and 25, we will once again enjoy the architecture of our cities: we suggest you walk them with the desire to know the architecture of the neighborhoods
